Closing out the Summer Season...

It seems that the scene has witnessed a true resurgence as of late…

Indeed, this new found revival appears to carry a very real sense of possibility & a feeling of anticipation for what the future may hold. Like the phoenix rising from a period that was caught in relative obscurity, there seems to be a new level of stature that's beginning to quench the thirst of many & usher in a new era.

Hey gays! Super gay (and lesbian, too!) comedy THIS SUNDAY in B'more, then Rehoboth!
Pssst!

This is *actual gay comedy* with actual gay (and they're REALLLY GAY) comedians, folks. You heard right. Actual gays! Doing THREE WHOLE shows, even!

Translation: this is NOT some sophomoric straight asshole being "ironic" or "edgy" by acting out every single stupid stereotype about gay men and expecting us all to say ha ha ha! I am so AMUSED that a heterosexual dude is playing up all ugly things gay so that he can a) make money and b) make money and c) oh yeah, MAKE MONEY.

Where was I? Oh yeah, money. These shows are bargains, people. Three fantastic queer comedians for awfully damn cheap.

First there's kickass cable TV and Logo Network regular ANT, then the aptly named (and ridiculously cute) Jason Dudey, and my own personal favorite badass dyke comedian Sabrina Matthews. I can personally vouch for her stupidly high stage show laugh-levels, and I'm not just saying that because her Comedy Central tv special was AWESOME (although it did crack me the hell up).

Flyers after the cut. Because I care, people.

Prop 8 UPDATE: SF Mayor Asked Court to Delay Prop 8 Ruling
Okay folks, this is the latest. I can't figure out if this makes me feel hopeful or hopeless.

EXCLUSIVE: SF Mayor Asked Court To Delay Prop 8

Confidential sources close to San Francisco City Hall told Towleroad's Corey Johnson that the California Supreme Court was prepared to release its opinion on Proposition 8 tomorrow, but decided to delay the ruling after a call from Mayor Gavin Newsom.

"Newsom reached out to the Supreme Court and asked them to hold off releasing their decision so it did not coincide with the White Night riots," said our source.

As mentioned earlier, a ruling Thursday would have fallen on the 30th anniversary of the San Francisco riots, which were set off when the court handed down the most lenient decision possible (voluntary manslaughter) against Dan White for the murders of supervisor Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone. The ensuing riots in San Francisco on May 21, 1979 caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.

Source: http://www.towleroad.com/2009/05/exclusive-sf-mayor-gavin-newsom-asked-court-to-delay-prop-8-ruling.html

Rest assured, there WILL be a Day of Decision celebration or demonstration when the CA Supreme Court makes the announcement. Traditionally, the court releases decisions on Mondays and Thursdays, and the deadline is June 3. So the remaining possible dates are:

Tues May 26 (because of the holiday)
Thurs May 28
Mon June 1

I'll send out the notice as soon as I get it, but for now there is no set date for the Day of Decision. I'll keep you all posted!

THIS WEDS. Happy Birthday and good bye, DYKE NIGHT.
Over the last six years, the DC Eagle has seen a lot of things. Well, mostly big ole leather clad fags doing christ knows what on the back patio...but I digress. Where was I? Oh yeah...for one night each and every single month a horde of women and transfolk have descended on the damn place and made something very, VERY special.

Dyke Night at the DC Eagle has no dance floor, no fancy fruity blended drinks, no DJ and above all, no fucking attitude. It's simply been a spot for like minded dykes, transfolk and queers and our friends to show up, play cheap pool, laugh at the copious quantities of Melissa Etheridge on the jukebox and toss back cheap drinks.

And oh yeah, we got have ONE night in ONE place every single fucking month to be our badass queer selves AND feel safe, welcomed and celebrated in a world that usually shows us anything but.

On a personal note, it's been an extraordinary chance for me to create community of which I am enormously proud, and for that I am deeply, deeply grateful. Thank you very much to all the most excellent peeps that have made Dyke Night such a special creature that I have loved so much. So much, in fact, that when it wasn't the right thing for me to do anymore, I decided to let it go.

Thank you from the bottom of my happy Dyke Night heart. For everything.

Special Announcement + Dyke Night THIS WEDNESDAY
To all the wonderful supporters of Dyke Night:

In February of 2002, Schelli Dittmann and Max Steiner decided that the leatherdykes in this town needed an event of our own, and they started Dyke Night at the DC Eagle. Without the two of them, there would be no Dyke Night, and we're damn lucky that they stepped up to the plate to make something special for us.

Over the last six years, Dyke Night has grown and changed a great deal: we got a LOT bigger, focused on conscious (and continuous) outreach to transfolk and dykes of color, started a yahoogroup, wrote monthly announcements, started a myspace page, took (and posted online) monthly photos, created a LiveJournal community, and above all did our very best to be a friendly, casual and welcoming space for ALL of us: the dyke, queer and trans community and our friends.

And now, 71 months, entirely too many online posts, and approximately 1,236 posted photos later, we're moving on. It's been one hell of a ride, folks, and it couldn't have happened without the following people:

Schelli Dittmann, Dyke Night founder
Max Steiner, Dyke Night founder
Bill and Ted of the DC Eagle
Meaghan O'Malley
The DC Kings
MetroWeekly and the Washington Blade
and of COURSE all of you terrific Dyke Night cheerleaders and supporters over the years.

So please come join me THIS WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28 for (the second-to-last) Dyke Night at the DC Eagle. There will be, as always, cheap drinks, pool tables and absolutely no attitude. And oh yeah, it's FREE.

And you KNOW we're planning a blowout 6th birthday/finale Dyke Night in February. Of COURSE. See you at the DC Eagle THIS WEDNESDAY!

Ho ho ho! NO Dyke Night this month!
Hello my lovelies:

We here at Dyke Night are going to spend some personal time with that Claus dude on Wednesday. Okay, I made that up because you KNOW it's way cooler to show mad love to his wife, right? I mean seriously, who do you think is really large and in charge of that operation, eh?

Either way, there will be NO Dyke Night THIS WEDNESDAY.

Dyke Night FAQ (revised 05/08):

Do I have to be into S&M to go?
Nope. You DO have to be 21 or over, though. Bring your ID! The DC Eagle is a leather bar and lots of the female and trans (and both!) patrons are leatherdykes. It is also a friendly atmosphere for dykes and transpeople of all shapes, colors, and sizes...and nobody will expect or require that you be into anything perverted. Although it's a bonus in many circles there ;)

But isn't the DC Eagle full of big scary guys in black leather with whips and chains?
Um...you should probably stop watching those late night Cinemax movies. Really. Seriously, though, the DC Eagle is a super-friendly neighborhood hangout bar for ALL types of queers. There are suits that come there after work, folks in jeans, dykes in big black boots, all different kinds of people, really. Above all, the DC Eagle is a safe and fun place for dykes and transfolk to hang out...especially on Dyke Night.

I'm scared to go alone. How do I find a friend to go with me?
That's easy! Join our yahoogroup at groups.yahoo.com/group/dceagledykenight and introduce yourself and ask to meet people. We really are a friendly lot. ;)

Why are you doing this?
We want more opportunities for dykes to get laid in this town! Seriously, though, we think it's important that there is a perv-positive place for us to gather, socialize, cruise and/or make new friends. Besides which, the DC Eagle is totally committed to providing a safe and fun place for us to hang out and meet each other.

What do you mean, "transfolk?"
Transfolk is an umbrella term to encompass all of the wonderful varieties and flavors of gender in our community. Dyke Night is a safe, fun place for all transgendered and transsexual people: MTF, FTM, genderqueer, intersexed, questioning, and more…ALL of us.

I am a transwoman. Am I *really* welcome at Dyke Night?
Yes. We are aware of the long history of the exclusion of transwomen in dyke space, which is absolutely unacceptable. As Dyke Night evolves and grows (and we ALL work on our transphobia), we hope to spread the word to more and more of the MTF community that MTFs are *always* welcome.

I am a person of color. Will I be the only non-white face at Dyke Night?
Absolutely not. We're working hard to make sure that Dyke Night (as well as Sunday School) is an inclusive space specifically for people of color...and we also understand that this particular work is and will be an ongoing process, as is the process of unlearning the pervasive racism in our culture. The perception that the leather community is not a welcoming one to people of color is a notion that we will continue to refute, one Dyke Nighter at a time. :)

Doesn't the name "Dyke Night" at the DC Eagle exclude FTMs?
Okay, it's called Dyke Night and not Dyke/Trans night. The name originated because some dykes wanted a space of their own in a leather bar. Today, Dyke Night recognizes that FTMs are a vital part of our community, and while the name is the same, please realize that there is absolutely no change in the commitment to be a trans-inclusive, safe, fun place for dykes and transfolk (both men and women) to hang out.

Can I wear my favorite sneakers/shiny outfit/perfume/cologne to Dyke Night??
While we encourage leather, of course, it's not required; the DC Eagle is a comfortable place to be yourself. Jeans are great! But please, DO NOT WEAR HEAVY PERFUMES OR SCENTS. Dyke Night is for everybody, including those who become ill around heavy perfume or cologne.

Are there a lot of butches? femmes? transwomen? transmen? regular dykes? hell, irregular dykes? all or none of the above?
Yes! There are lots of hot femmes, packing butches, and folks that identify as neither or both...including our trans and non-trans male supporters. Dyke Night welcomes you!

What's with the shoe thing?
The policy at the DC Eagle is NO FLIP FLOPS and NO SLIP-ON SHOES without a heel strap. We'd hate for your sweet little tootsies to get squished by some big stompy boots (it has happened, unfortunately, hence the rule) so please make sure you have appropriate footwear when you visit. You MUST wear shoes that are attached to your cute little feet with at least a heel strap, otherwise the doorperson will NOT allow you in, so again, PLEASE no flip-flops or slip-on sandals, a'ight?

(and a special note to all high-heel lovin' femmes out there, we want your precious feet to be safe so when you wear the stilettos, please make sure that your shoe has a strap and covers your heel, m'kay?)

Dyke Night. THIS WEDS. DC Eagle. FREE!
So you're prepping for your four helpings of tofurkey on Thursday but right now you just wanna bundle up and snuggle at home with your life partner and ponder winter solstice rituals instead of actually setting your Birks aside and leaving your house on Wednesday night.

Or perhaps you peeled off them fancy Donna Karan pantyhose on Friday after another fucking exhausting day on the Hill, poured yourself a nice glass of Beaujolais, and wondered how you are gonna meet your goal of retiring by 45 when you're only putting $2K a month in your IRA...and the last thing you wanna do is go to some skeevy leather bar on the 26th. I mean really, beer in cups is just so tacky.

Mayyyybe you got some damn sense in your head and hauled ass out to Phase 1 over the weekend to preemptively dance this Thursday's marshmallow yams right off your hot little heinie. Which means that of COURSE you're prepped for Dyke Night THIS WEDNESDAY. Perhaps you should have a chat with the other two, hmmm?

Look, Dyke Night is all about being a fun and friendly and wildly diverse hangout. We don't give a shit if you come in your suit or wear jeans or hate softball or own a whole fucking softball team or listen to death metal or think Kenny G is the second coming of christ or are new to town or have lived here your whole life and worked your way through half of the eligible dyke or lesbian or trans or all of the above population.

What we care about is a seriously badassed good time. Which is pretty easy, actually...the having a good time part, I mean. Here are just a few of the many reasons why:

Ridiculously cheap drinks? Check.
A double dose of biggo pool tables? Check.
Cups of beer upstairs for a mere dollar? Check.
Absolutely ZERO snotty attitude? Hell yeah, checkity check.
Jukebox insanity? Check.
Two entire floors of interesting nooks and crannies and even a SMOKING PATIO UPSTAIRS? Check.
A happy friendly hostess? Duh. Who the hell else would write this crap every month, hmmmm?
